Klaus Zimmerman, 27, from Spokane, Washington, was a commercial artist born in Hamburg, Germany. On May 15, he left his home to take pictures of the mountain. When Mount St. Helens erupted, his car was hit by a mudflow on the Spirit Lake Highway a mile above Camp Baker, near the North Fork of the Toutle River, about 15 miles northwest of the mountain. He died of ash asphyxiation in the front seat of his car.
