Al Handy
Al Handy, 34, was a grocery warehouseman in Puyallup, Washington. He had been camping with his friend Clyde Croft near the Polar Star Mine on the Green River. When the blast cloud spilled over the ridge to the south and filled the Green River valley, Handy ran toward the mine to take shelter but died of ash asphyxiation about 20 yards away from its entrance.
