Book Cover: Fred Rollins

Fred Rollins, 58, and his wife Margery Rollins, 52, from Hawthorne, California, drove their station wagon to the roadblock northwest of the mountain on the morning of May 18. Fred was a retired security guard for Air Research Manufacturing. When the volcano erupted, they drove 80 mph down the Spirit Lake Highway in an attempt to get away. A car passed them from behind and its occupants survived, but the Rollins disappeared in the blast cloud. Fred died of burns and ash asphyxiation beside the car, and Margery died in the passenger’s seat from ash asphyxiation.
